Wild Cherry Bark
Harvested from the inner bark of wild cherry trees, this plant medicine has a wide range of benefits. Wild cherry bark helps to open up the lower respiratory system to move stuck mucus up and out while drying it up. It has a calming effect that eases coughing spasms that lead to irritated throats. Wild cherry’s calming and nervine properties make it useful for nighttime coughing that makes it hard to sleep.
This herb is cooling to soothe sore, red, and inflamed tissues in the sinuses and throat. It’s not just useful for the occasional cold though. Wild cherry can help ease asthma symptoms, strengthen heart health, and help improve digestion.
Rosehips are are little powehouses and promote overall well-being. With their immune-boosting properties, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, high vitamin C content and detox cleansing abilities, rosehips are a true treasure for those seeking wellness.
Marshmallow Root
The demulcent, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and emollient properties of marshmallow have long been in use for inflammation and sore throats (Whelan, n.d.). Nowadays herbalists still value this demulcent for supporting mucosal membranes. Additionally, the German Commission E, a scientific federal medical advisory board, has approved marshmallow root for oral and pharyngeal mucosa irritation and dry cough.
Licorice root has a wealth of health benefits, including reducing inflammation, aiding digestion, and boosting the immune system. Licorice root imparts a delicate, sweet taste to loose leaf tea blends.
Mullein has demulcent, expectorant and astringent properties and its leaves and flowers are rich in saponins which are thought to be responsible for the potent respiratory benefits of this herb. It also contain mucilage which coats and soothes irritated mucus membranes, while its expectorant qualities help to expel congestion from the lungs. Mullein also contains a compound called verbascoside which has a proven anti-inflammatory action and is particularly helpful in easing joint and muscle pain.
Plantain
This seemingly lowly little weed, ubiquitous in disturbed and compacted soils around the world, has a surprisingly broad range of uses! Among these many uses, plantain is a powerful ally for lung health, helping inflamed and irritated airways.
Horehound
This somewhat bitter mint family herb is famous for soothing wet coughs and moving along the thick, damp mucus associated with allergies. Horehound was such an important herb for the lungs and bronchial system, that it used to be called “Lungenkraut” (meaning “lung-herb”) in Central Europe.
Horehound leaves aid with thinning mucus and clearing it from the airways while quelling spasms . Once old mucus has been expectorated, new more active immune cell containing mucus can form. This is one example of how horehound works by shifting the environment of the body so that the body can restore vitality and balance .
Furthermore, the relaxing diaphoretic nature of horehound makes it a useful herbal ally for respiratory infections that include fever, painful swollen throat, hoarseness, and sinus mucus drainage. It also carries an analgesic action, that is it has been found to ease pain, particularly pain associated with coughs and sore throats
Elecampane
This beautiful sunflower relative produces pungent, balsamy roots, which were traditionally used to soothe bronchial spasms, infections, and to move and clear congestion.
Just like horehound and thyme, this herb has expectorant properties that thin and move mucus, making the mucus easier to eliminate. Therefore, elecampane is helpful for making coughs more productive and hence reducing congestion. In addition to being an excellent expectorant, it also soothes the tissue irritation and inflammation that results from coughing (Hoffmann, 2003).
Thanks to aromatic properties, elecampane root encourages movement in the respiratory tract, stimulating a better overall function and vitality.
Osha Root
For more than a millennia, Osha Root has been used by Native Americans. This perennial herb is found in deep rich soil in the mountains of the US and Mexico. Osha is used to treat sore throat, bronchitis, cough, common cold, influenza and pneumonia. It is thought to be a potent antiviral and antibacterial agent, which can help with bronchial infections and sore throats. Chewing directly on the whole Osha induces perspiration which can boost the body’s immune system and will create a numbing effect for sore throats. Tea made from Osha Root may also relieve some gastrointestinal discomfort and is also sometimes used to increase appetite.
